Cleaning house

So, I cleaned most of the house today, which was good. It’s amazing when you get into the daily routine of living, and what needs cleaned all the time, it’s easy to overlook things or areas that in fact need to be cleaned. I think this strikes me more because, well, this is a ‘new’ house to me. I have to set the cleaning routines myself. No other woman (person for some of you) is going to say, “and then you need to clean this foggy little window by the door because even though you can’t tell, it actually is dirty”. I have to discover these things on my own. Now that I actually have time to clean the normal stuff AND look in all the crevices and such, I keep noticing areas that I have simply overlooked. I cleaned things today for the first time! Ever. I think some of it has to do with eye level, and rearranging things. Thankfully, I occasionally (my sister may not believe this) get a little obsessive when I clean. This is how I noticed that the area around our front door was not as clean as it appeared. I was using my wonderful little mr. clean wall scrubber thing on the wall beneath the bay window ( I don’t know how that cat gets that area dirty, but he does) and I just carried over to the door area- and I was like ah! dirt! It’s an off-white color and it never really gets direct light, so I just didn’t see it! We (I say we because me, Melanie, Karla and John all put in some effort) painted the area all around this door last year and I never noticed it! Now, in my defense, I have noticed that certain improvements in cleaning supplies and techniques are yielding better results when cleaning which may make it seem like they were really bad (namely, the mr. clean scrubber – I love those things). For instance, those things can clean a faucet like you wouldn’t believe. (I know, I know, I’m so domestic, hehe).

Anyhow, do any of you who are living in new houses/apartments find that you can go a long while and then suddenly notice an area that needs cleaning that you never noticed before? Maybe it’s just me.

I am proud to say that I actually made a good meal every “working” week night this week (only 3, I know). But I used my new slow cooker cookbook from JaNae. Tonight was really yummy, a rosemary chicken recipe. Super easy and it was really good, then I made whole grain brown rice and I have to say it was all very nice. =) John’s just happy that I’m cooking on a regular basis again. =) later.

  • Anonymous - I have that problem too! All of a sudden I see something in a certain light or at a certain eye level and I hope that no one was ever looking there before! I’m trying to get better by tacking on one area/thing to my normal weekly cleaning routine(ceiling fans, baseboards, blinds, etc.). Seems to help a little, but just don’t go into the rooms that we hardly use! Luckily, my neat-freak of a husband helps too! I think that I may be coming as obsessive as he is about clutter! –J
