Manual = Patience

So, I know there has been quite a bit of rediscovering of film cameras and other mediums that have been seemingly abandoned for the shiny happy more economical quick automatic instant digital goodies.  I love my digital goodies.  But I see photo friends rediscovering their love for things manual, and film and slow, and I think – that sounds nice, I wish I had my old manual Nikon back [from the roommate who never gave it back, ahem], maybe I’ll go find an old manual camera on craigslist and play.  But the days go by and I don’t.

But then, just today I’m looking through the office trying to find a book that someone requested from me on www.paperbackswap.com (if you read, you must try this!) and I find in the ‘old photo things’ basket, my husbands old I-don’t-know-where-he-got-it-from Pentax  K1000. Well then. The thing is, I’ve seen this camera many times, I just kept forgetting it was there.  I don’t know what it was about this time that made me pick it up and really start playing with it.  Of course, I had no idea if there is film in it or not… so I open it. Yep. film.  Looks like we’re about 1/3 of the way into a roll of 400 color film.  oops.  But all is not lost. So I closed it back up, advanced a couple clicks and we’re back in business. Of course the film has surely expired by now, but that can make for some fun pictures. It’s got a nice 50mm f/2 lens on it, and the click is so wonderful.  So I’ve played around a bit with it this morning, especially now that the SUN has come out! And I can already feel it’s subtle pull, saying “slow down. think. take your time. focus. this is all you.”  I love the way it makes you slow down.  Cause no matter how quickly you get through that roll – you STILL have to wait for it to be developed.

It’s also extra fun since the battery for the light meter needs replaced (the only part of this camera that uses a battery).  But thanks to all the manual shooting I’ve been doing this year, I have high hopes for what’s going to come out.

So, eventually, once I finish this roll, and scan the images, I’ll show you. =)

Happy Friday people!

  • Katie in MA - Even the camera itself looks like a fun find! Except, I’d probably use it as a prop on a shelf and then you’d smack me and say, “What are you doing that for?!!” 🙂 Can’t wait to see how the pics turn out!
