We Do Big Breakfast Weekends | The Sweet Life

Ok – so blueberry pancakes isn’t exactly an epic breakfast, but hey it’s not cereal. Not that I’m judging cereal. I have it almost every weekday morning. It gets the job done.

I don’t know when it started. Somehow over the course of the past few years, we’ve really started to enjoy having something that’s completely yummy and delightful and takes way longer than 5 minutes to make for breakfast on the weekends. It doesn’t always get done BOTH weekend mornings – especially now that The Dude is here, but we’re not letting this tradition of ours fade away.  It’s fun. It’s perfect for lazy Saturday mornings. There’s just something wonderful about standing in the kitchen in my pjs making a huge mess and spending just a little more effort to make something stick-to-your-ribs yummy for breakfast – or more often than not, brunch.

Sometimes it’s planned well in advance – like if I’ve got a big craving for my Aunt’s homemade super batch cinnamon rolls. More often than not it’s just whatever we’ve got handy. I try not to repeat from one weekend to the next, but I know that we’ve had sweet potato pancakes 3 weeks in a row at some point. The last five things I’ve made? Blueberry pancakes – (real blueberries and Bisquick =), regular pancakes, pear stuffed french toast (thank you Mad Hungry cookbook!!) for the lazier version just put the pears on top, sweet potato pancakes (we like our pancakes) and probably an omlet in there somewhere. =)

It was funny when my parents were in town and my dad picked up some donuts and fritters to have. That was always his favorite Sunday morning breakfast treat when I was growing up. Still is I think 😉 Traditions are neat that way, kind of like photos. They take you back to moments in time.

So for at least one morning a week, all dieting laws are suspended and we can enjoy the pure deliciousness of a little time in the kitchen and a little time together. Definitely a keeper.

Stay tuned for my next ‘Sweet Life’ post. I’m going to attempt German cheesecake this week. Oh yes.
